When one applies for law school, the polite response need not be to accept; so long as the response is politely worded, the law school feels that they have been polite to their applicant. Much of the law is filled with quandaries like this. Students study the art of diplomacy and learn that it is merely saying "nice doggie" until one finds a rock; one learns through experience that every lawyer joke in the book is true.
